Joel's Thoughts: Unintended Consequences

Joel's Thoughts: Unintended Consequences

Unintended Consequences

Copied and pasted from:  http://peoplecanignoreit.blogspot.com/

This is from anonymous. You might want to check it out. Then read on.

How do you like the websites you visit? How do you like what Microsoft has given you? How do you like the computer you bought?

These questions and more will be considered if SOPA gets passed. SOPA is only one of the latest ham-handed efforts by the government to regulate the internet. Essentially it is designed to give power to shut down websites to any one IN power who complains about some website or blog you visit. It assumes the website you visit is guilty of stealing information. Pirating. This will essentially give government the control of information that you crave. Back to the old top 3 news networks right?.. Not so fast and don't despair.

By great good luck, some paranoid chaps figured this out a few years ago and decided to do something about it. First things first though. Do you know what operating system you use? Do you know what style computer you have? Do you know what it takes to change a hard drive in a computer? Did you know that Microsoft can arbitrarily shut down your computer? Make it impossible for the non-tech to fix it unless they buy their software and hire a tech-savvy person to fix it?

That last happened to me. I happen to be tech-savvy and avoided the land mine laid by those good fellows from Microsoft. They were going to shut down my operating system without so much as a whoopsie, my bad. Basically I had to find the code key that authorized me using my computer. Think about that for a minute. I had bought this machine. I had software that I bought. I was not using it in an unlawful manner. I wasn't visiting porn sites. I wasn't engaging in terrorist commerce. I just had a problem with my mother board and I switched my mother board with one that worked. Unfortunately, Microsoft hadn't known that I did that and threatened to shut my computer down because I was using an unauthorized operating system on an unauthorized mother board. Hmmmm. They were more than willing to SELL me a new operating system if I couldn't come up with the proper code key. Well I found the code key and it got me to thinking. What happens if they did this because you did something they didn't like, like visit an opposing software giant? Apple? Well, visiting Apple is all well and good with Microsoft. How about visiting a blog that doesn't like Microsoft? I could lose my computer access to the internet because Microsoft didn't like me.

Well, I did me some research. I found a group of guys who didn't like Microsoft. They also didn't like Apple. They didn't like always getting an update that did nothing for them. They didn't like that Microsoft through their update system could load something on to your drive that you know nothing about. They didn't like that Microsoft could shut down their computers. They did something about it. The created  GNU. It is actually a free operating system. Free everything. In what is called open source code. In other words, it is written in plain English what it does. Their are no surprises. Anyone can get it. Anyone can use it. Anyone can contribute to it. There are some caveats. Mostly to do with freedom and liberty.

Dislike what Microsoft did to your reliable XP, Vista or even change the 32 to 64 bit which upsets your printer? No problem. With GNU, you decide. There are updates. Only ones you decide to update. The open source code allows you read what they changed and then decide. Download something that doesn't work? Well, there are forums which help guide you.

Now, this seems too good to be true. Well, you will have to get some basic knowledge, like how to compile a program. Something you do everyday when you visit  websites only you don't know you do it. The computer does it for you. You might have to if Microsoft is coerced into working with the Government on "stymieing the pirates", which is you.

SOPA will bring Microsoft down. One unintended consequence. Well, you say that the government will just shut down the internet...... Yes, they can shutdown nodes and certain routers, but....I did me some research into that too. It seems that the internet is designed to withstand a cyber attack, a nuclear explosion, power outages etc, etc. It was designed by the military. As long as electricity is applied to the net and you have power, you have connectivity. Which means you can get by with out an internet provider. You have cell phones and access to them. Which means you have access to the internet.

Now, about the computer you labored mightily to purchase only to be cut off and the hard drive doesn't work. Well, it takes a total of six screws to remove a hard drive from a computer case. There are several videos on YouTube which can show you how to do it. This introduction to building your own computer gets you started down the road to be able to replace your hard drive. It even features a computer case which will allow you to remove the hard drive with out picking up a Phillips head screwdriver. Neat hunh? You might end up totally rebuilding your computer into the information-age equivalent of a racer.

The unintended consequences are that more people will become less enamored with anything that government says it will do. Government will decree, but good folks will ignore them like they ignored Prohibition. News will be more word of mouth....er word of blog. Microsoft will go down in history as a major thief. Amazon e-readers won't be read and News Organizations will falter. All possible if SOPA passes. Does the government really want to go down that path?

Computer access.....denied

Why don't they have handwriting fonts...just saying.

....ok ok

Computer access denied...well not really but might as well be.

My motherboard on my computer 'somehow' burnt out the local network connection thingy...so I get to use this computer....hubby's...but if you know me then you know that he is in front of it 24/7...soooooooooo....yeah I have and ipad but it sucks now.

That's ok...I haven't lost my sarcastic humor or anything and someday some wonderful day I'll get another computer. (I really want an Area 51) Then I'll be back to my normal unable to keep my mouth shut self.   Until then stolen moments will have to do...I mean, he has to pee from time to time and if I make sure he keeps drinking coffee then 'the set' will be free...heehee.

Now what do I have to say:

1.  No surprise that Cain dropped out.  I knew he would.  How you say?  GOP will take down their own in order to protect the illusion of elitism. Cain campaign was quickly becoming a joke...and it wasn't funny.

2.  Michele Bachmann Still thinks she can win because she thinks she is "A true Tea Partier"...hahhahhahaaheeehehehehehahahahaa....ok ok uncontrolable laughter.  What else is left to say about that.

Perry is trying his best...but failing.  I still like the guy, he is

funny. Plus he pushes Romney's buttons.  I'm still voting for

him as of now.

Newt is who I think will be the Rep. nominee.

He walks the walk and talks the talk.

****New Predictions and random thoughts

When is the best time to quit?  When it's the worst time to quit!!

Cain will drop out....will that's a given right...giggling

It will still be Perry vs Obama in 2012

Republican Elite will take down any respected Republican before they let them go through this next Presidential Term.

If Obama wins he will address the nation and say something like....I have put all my sweat and blood into making this a better society for all to live in.....yada yada yada...I feel this country is in need of mother's nurturing that my VP Ms. Clinton can provide.   So with hope for the future I am handing the reins over to my VP...to usher us into a New Society.

My computer has crashed and burnt guys...I snatched a moment just to jot this down.

Disclaimer:

I'm a Republican and always will be.  I think America needs to lighten up and laugh at themselves a lot more than they do.  My humor is not meant to lean in any direction.  It only slightly favors poking fun at Republicans because I seek out news about them more often.  I mean who cares what the nut jobs and democrats have going on.

So to make it clear:

Republicans will be the main party I browbeat because they are the only ones that make my emotions run gauntlet...because I care what they do and wish they would just laugh more at themselves and move on.

Presidential Fairytale

As a Republican I have a working theory that I am trying hard to explain to my VERY Republican husband.  Only I’m getting nowhere.  I don’t think my theory is flawed but then again it very well might be.  Let start by saying this could in no way be admitted until after 2016 and even then it’s scandalous to have even been considered.

(This might sting)  As a loyal Republican I think the best choice for President 2012 is Obama.  Actually the only choice…as of now…for the greater good and future. Now before a tea partier or Libertarian gets bent out of whack, let me explain. ~~think future, think sweet victory and prosperous future for your children…Oooooh, Oooooh (clapping happily) think like a liberal.  You’ll be saving America and not just a tree or a frog or whatever it is this week…you can't top saving AMERICA~~

Imagine 2012…blue, silver and red shining foil confetti flying, balloons floating down with Republican pride and cheers and laughter roar as ‘Hail to the Chief’ plays loudly.  American Republicans have taken Washington BACK from Barack.  America will soon again reign and fears of ‘The Fall of the Dollar’ will no longer awaken President Perry from his cozy naps with Teddy (as in a bear jezz what were you thinking?)

In our almost perfect red, white and blue fairy tale the House and Senate is also Republican controlled.  Perry hard at work and gleefully thinking and slightly bouncing happily… my chair is in the same position The Bill Clinton’s chair sat in and mine has (sneakily snarling)…V-I-B-RATE mode.  A solemn look and heart sinking stab (no it’s not mob related don’t be silly…oh God no don’t kill me it’s a joke…I’m still a little scared) shatters the brief victorious daydream of a future.  As Perry slowly turns and stares hopelessly at the shovel leaning against the wall.  He stands and fighting hard to hold back the tears of real long term defeat and realization of desolation. He grasp the shovel puts is best happy we won face on cheerful strolls his way down to the humongous Pile o' Poop and Dingleberries left behind. He stands alongside Congress as they begin to start shoveling.

Two years have dragged by…..

A tired stinky Congress and Perry finally stop for a long awaited cigar and brandy.  “Finally we have done it,” someone yells.  “We have made a noticeable change!!”  Back slaps and long need swipes from sweaty bloody brows are replaced by chants of “It’s been two years and this is it?  Is this all you have done for me and mine?  I was better off three years ago.  I still don’t have a GOOD paying job.  I made more looking for work than I do actually doing the work.  You can’t blame the Democrat’s this time. You Republicans have had two plus years in office and Congress and this this is it?”

Dazed and confused no one knew what to say…Perry and Congress stood speechless.  Heavy sunken hearts…blood and sweat tinged eyes and calloused hands the once proud man stood broken and the hope and dream they shared no longer seemed possible.

The moral to this fatal fairy tale:
Faith in the American individual no longer has a backer.  In my opinion, and trust me I hope I am proven wrong, not many and nowhere near enough individual people will see a big enough change in two short years to believe a Republican President with a Republican majority did enough. They will be unable to fathom the thought…it takes a while to dig your way a path when there’s that much that needs to be moved.  The sweat, blood, tears and back-breaking efforts will be viewed and reported as Republican Spa Day.

America will flip flop faster than a Presidential candidate.  There lurking as always in the slimy underbelly a fierce flock of new Democrats will descend upon America.  There will be promises and lies unlike any before because Democratic Congressmen (ladies just play the card you won’t shovel.....) know the labored hours and sacrifices that all made, as they stood there shoveling that huge pile united as one.  Fear will fuel the Democratic campaign…fear of standing there with that shovel again.  It will not be four years of hypocrisy it will be eight.

I do not believe that Obama will do as much damage in four years as the most perfect Republican would.  Obama will be golfing, sailing and carefree.  Michelle will have four years of vacation (she’ll need it too can you imagine what a pompousasssss…maners dear my conscience says in my husband’s voice.) I’ll take four years of Obama Skim By tactics…and motto of Nothing in it for me…just ride it out in style.
If Obama wins I have hope.   Not in Obama but Knights in shining amour. Ryan, Christie, Pawlenty, West and with some tweaks Palin.  OMG…I really just got chills.  What an Elite smart group of outstanding Presidential candidates we Republicans would have.
Flip here….
If Perry wins and I believe he will.  What hope is there?  I don’t see a happily ever after in this Presidential fairytale.
Just as a tiny suggestion…Please send Ron Paul to England as Czar of something or Ambassador how about Czar of Ambassador….they love him.  He would jump on that.
